Advice for Selecting a Care Home

Selecting a long-term care home for a loved one living with a memory disorder is a difficult decision to make. When a proper placement is made, however, family members and their loved ones can gain the benefit that comes from knowing specialized care will be provided in an environment that is safe, secure and comfortable. Finding the right care home, however, does take a little legwork. Here are some tips that can help guide the process:

• Understand the setting that will best serve the loved one –Nursing homes differ from residential care homes in that they provide nursing care around the clock. Residential care homes, however, may sometimes have a similar capacity and those that specialize in memory disorders will have specially trained staff on hand to assist loved ones. It is often best to get insights from the loved one’s healthcare provider on the level of assistance recommended.

• Look into backgrounds – Before choosing a care home for a loved one, be sure to look into a home’s licensing, background, any complaints filed and other related issues. It can also be very helpful to speak with residents or family members of residents to get a feel for how staff interacts with residents and the level of care provided.

• Visit – It is imperative to make a few personal visits before selecting a care home. Ask questions about the services provided, pay attention to the level of care offered residents and take note of the cleanliness of the facility. It can also be very helpful, if feasible, to have the loved one along for a visit or two to determine which setting he or she is most comfortable with.

Selecting a care home for a loved one living with a memory disorder takes a little time and research. Putting in the effort can result in a home care setting that enables a loved one to live life as fully as possible while receiving a high level of care in the process.
